The University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Office
of Postgraduate Professional Education is offering an ACPE accredited Diabetes
Care Certificate Program, offering over 30 continuing education contact hours.
This Diabetes Care Certificate program consists of multiple phases, combining online
and live hands-on training. Participants will complete an online pre-test to assess
their baseline knowledge, review online course work and complete the didactic
online post-test, prior to the start of the live session. A 2.5-day workshop will
consist of hands-on meter training, an insulin injection technique workshop, as
well as a patient panel session. The experiential component of this program will
consist of one half-day shadowing rotation in a diabetes clinic and online submission
of patient interventions.
Participants will also be required to follow a simulated insulin injection regimen
(actual injection using placebo) and perform self-monitoring of blood glucose for
several days. If you have a strong commitment to the delivery of pharmaceutical
care to the patient with diabetes, are interested in establishing or enhancing a
diabetes practice at your work site and wish to document interventions on behalf
of patients, then this program will be of a benefit to you.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 2000, diabetes
is the 6th leading cause of death. It is estimated that 17 million Americans
have diabetes, among which only 11.1 million are diagnosed leaving 5.9 million
undiagnosed Americans. Of the 11.1 million diagnosed patients, most are not meeting
recommended Standards Of Care set forth by the American Diabetes Association (ADA),
putting them at increased risk for long-term complications.
